This morning, I was watching my weekly dose of Real Time with Bill Maher. The panelists were Newsweek’s Editor Jon Meacham (adding the proper amount of gravitas), Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (who has always been a solid, smart, likeable and balanced Real Time guest) and…Ashton Kutcher? Whoa! Was polyester-wearing Kelso really ready to play with the big boys? Turns out, he was. Kutcher was the best spoken, most thoughtful and most animated of the bunch.
When they tackled the topic of the economy, he suggested the oil companies bail out the auto companies since they contributed in large part to the auto companies’ failures. When Bill brought up Kutcher’s “punking business,” Kutcher came back with a well-timed response about how he feels that we’re being punked because the chiefs of the financial institutions who got us into this mess are the beneficiaries of much of the bailout money. He intelligently defended gay marriage rights by defining it in terms of church and state, he referenced Lincoln’s cabinet of rivals when discussing Obama reaching out to McCain, and, best yet, when Dan Savage appeared via satellite clearly crushing on Kutcher, Kutcher smiled mischievously and said, “I would never date you.” The anecdote he shared of Savage was a funny one.
I, for one, am excited that Kelso is more than just eye candy. But I’m sad to know that my DVR will be Real Time-less until the end of February. It was the season finale. New Rule: Don’t give Bill Maher a rest!
