This Week’s Top 5: Best Music Videos

Mariela:

1.Blur – Coffee and TV

That little Henson-created milk carton had me at hello by cuteness alone.  But then he proves to be brave as well when he beats the odds and obstacles on his way to solving the case of the missing Graham Coxon? Too much, too much!

2.Michael Jackson – Thriller

3.Weezer – Buddy Holly

4.Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit

5.Radiohead – Knives Out

Autumn:

1. Radiohead – No Surprises

A perfect music video because of its pure simplicity, I knew the first time I saw ‘No Surprises’ it was my favorite. It has no camera movement, simple and authentic lighting, the behind-the-scenes reveal of a tele-prompter in reverse (a lyrical cheat sheet) and a close up of Thom Yorke’s near drowning head–all caught in magnificent timing. The climactic chorus is brilliantly rendered by the satisfaction on Yorke’s face–an almost hydro-erotic smirk that is enforced by his lilting, wet eyes–and the fact that he survived death by drowning. A committed front man, indeed.

2. Beastie Boys – Sabotage

This just seems like too much fun and, at the time, re-vamping the 70s was original and kitschy in the very best way.

3. Radiohead – Karma Police

Gorgeous cinematography. Great narrative structure with simple three act storytelling. Thom Yorke makes a ghostly cameo and we all go up in flames.

4. Radiohead – Just

The video that keeps us all asking: ‘What the f*ck did he say?!’

5. Duran Duran – Hungry Like the Wolf

The hottest band of men from the 80s running around the jungle with a half-beast vixen and my little girl heart went weak. Sex, exoticism, and John Taylor with his jacket and no shirt look? I’m sold.

Mariola:

1. Madonna – Material Girl

I would say all of Madonna’s videos from her glory days had a huge influence on me growing up, along with every other girl in America. Lucky Star, Borderline, Like a Virgin, Papa Don’t Preach and even her more “adult” music videos like Vogue, Express Yourself, Like a Prayer, and Take a Bow.

2. Beastie Boys – Sabotage

3. Duran Duran – The Reflex

4. ZZ Top – Legs

5. Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Want to Have Fun
