World Cup Matters: What’s with the LoFi WiFi, South Africa?

This does not bode well for those of us heading to South Africa next summer for World Cup:

“Broadband promised to unite the world with super-fast data delivery – but in South Africa it seems the web is still no faster than a humble pigeon,” a BBC report claims.

Apparently, Winston the Pigeon, shown below, is ‘over the moon’ about his triumph over South Africa’s Telkom, the country’s biggest web firm.

Working in the media industry, I understand how hard it is to upload files from time to time. Our company has used XO/Citi-Tel, Covad, Verizon, and RoadRunner all searching for that media holy grail: wicked fast internet service. However, South African telecommunications companies, listen up! You’re hosting the world’s largest sporting event in 9 months–you better get up to speed.
